The Asthma Mapping Project was conducted to assess the distribution of asthma among children in Kent County.
Organizations involved in this project include:
Kent County Health Department (KCHD)
Healthy Homes Coalition (HHC)
Head Start for Kent County (HS4KC)
Asthma Network of West Michigan (ANWM)
West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC)
University of Michigan Children’s Environmental Health Center Community Outreach and Translation Core (webpage coming soon).
Information on Asthma Prevalence in Children
8.3% of children birth to 17 years of age have asthma nationally (2013)
11.1% of children birth to 17 years of age have asthma in Michigan (2010)
On average 9.8% of children under 18 years had asthma (2011-2013)
7.8% of Head Start children in Kent County have an asthma action plan (2009-2014)
Head Start Population with Asthma
Red dots indicate children enrolled in Head Start (between September 2009 and May 2014) who have an asthma action plan. An asthma action plan means that children have been diagnosed with asthma by a physician.
Blue dots indicate children enrolled in Head Start (between September 2009 and May 2014) who did not have an asthma action plan (children have not been diagnosed with asthma by a physician). Most children enrolled in Head Start do not have asthma.
Head Start children cannot be identified from these maps. The dots in a neighborhood are randomly dispersed within that neighborhood, so the exact location of the children cannot be determined. This map also displays the combined totals (2009-2014) of children enrolled in Head Start so there is no way of knowing whether a child with asthma is currently in the area or not.
To qualify for participation in Head Start, families must be at or below 100% of the poverty level. For example, a family of four would qualify if annual income is equal to or less than $24,250. Exceptions would be those that are categorically eligible: foster child or homeless, and those with a diagnosed disability (valid IEP).
The demographics of the Kent County Head Start population are approximately 1/3-1/3-1/3 – African American-Hispanic-White. Head Start is funded to serve all of Kent County but currently services are concentrated in the greater Grand Rapids area.
The following maps show distribution by where children live, the income of the neighborhood, race and ethnicity:
